Core Processes and Activities Following is a summary of the major job processes of this job. Other duties may be performed as required by the supervisor and the organizational leadership. Specific activities may change from time to time: Job Responsibilities 1. Manages and coordinates the activities and programs (clinical services, educational activities, research, and drug distribution) of the Department of Pharmacy Services. 2. Provides leadership through planning, organizing, coordinating, continually monitoring, and evaluating the quality of services provided: i. In conjunction with the Supervisors (or managers), Staff Development team, and Clinical Managers, sets defined goals/objectives and timetables for implementation of pharmaceutical care specific to the particular needs of the patients. ii. Monitors progress of pharmacy leadership in achieving the stated goals/objectives and assists them in resolving concerns to ensure timeliness of results. iii. Assures that the department develops and maintains patient specific clinical competency by guiding Clinical Manager in designing practical staff development programs, conducting competency assessment, and (if necessary) opportunities for remedial training (including reassignment of personnel). 3. Manages pharmacy leadership personnel in establishing project priorities, evaluating existing pharmaceutical services for effectiveness and productivity, and
justifying/planning for expansion of services. 4. Establishes and measures standards of performance and quality assurance monitors for the delivery and use of medications. Develops or assures development of hospital-wide policies and maintains necessary records and controls consistent with local state, and national guidelines for pharmaceutical services such as those defined by: JCAHO, FDA, DEA, ATF, North Carolina Board of Pharmacy and other regulatory agencies. 5. Maintains continuous communications with patient care areas and ancillary departments, developing and maintaining an effective working relationship with the administrative staff, medical staff, nursing staff, and others. 6. Establishes prudent fiscal control of the Department of Pharmacy Services. Develops, prepares, and presents Department revenue, expense, and statistical budgets.
Allocates adequate resources commensurate with authority for assessing and improving services provided. Assures the preparation of statistical, performance, and analytical reports as required. 7. Recruits, orients, motivates, and maintains an effective staff to carry out assigned responsibilities. Provides leadership support in the communication and integration of the health systems Mission Statement. Clearly communicates the organization's and pharmacy's mission and vision to all staff. Ensures staff participation in required education programs and appropriate orientation and training courses to maintain competency in job skills, knowledge, and equipment. Promotes staff development through continuing education; promotes staff presentation of programs and contributions to the literature: encourages attendance at state and national organization's meetings. 8. Makes regular rounds in all areas served by Pharmacy Services to inspect and evaluate the work of departmental personnel. Responds promptly to suggestions, complaints, and compliments from customers and insures that all Pharmacy Services staff members do the same. 9. Develops and/or supervises the development of policies and procedures governing the operation of Pharmacy Services. Insures that policies and procedures are reviewed on a regular basis and revised as necessary. 10. Develops and directs drug use evaluation programs to assure that prescribing concerns are addressed and result in, at a minimum, educational programs and services designed to improve prescribing practices. 11. Participates in the development, implementation, and evaluation of the Novant Health Continuous Quality Improvement Plan to identify improvement
opportunities. 12. Develops, recommends, and implements security and inventory control procedures to protect the hospital's investment in drugs, supplies, and equipment. 13. Evaluates and oversees materials presented by subordinates at (and pharmacy personnel participation on) medical staff and multi-disciplinary committees to assure quality and competency of pharmacy services input. Evaluates all materials emanating from the Department of Pharmacy Services to the medical and pharmaceutical community to assure quality and consistency. 14. Maintains up-to-date knowledge of pharmacy equipment, technology, and service philosophies and recommends appropriate changes when more efficient and/or effective hardware and methods become available. Directs the implementation of approved recommendations. 15. Establishes and maintains a strong network
of personal contacts at the local, state, and national levels. Enhances personal reputation and that of the Novant health by contributing to the collective pharmaceutical knowledge through publications and presentations.16. Ensures that employees respect the rights, privacy and property of others at all times, including the confidentiality of information, according to Administrative Policies and all applicable laws and regulations. 17. Ensures staff participation in required education programs and appropriate orientation and training courses to maintain competency in job skills, knowledge and equipment. 18. Qualifications The following qualifications are the minimum necessary to adequately perform this job. However, any equivalent combination of experience, education and training which provides the necessary knowledge, skills and abilities would be acceptable, subject to any legal and/or regulatory requirements.A. Advanced degree in pharmacy (M.S. [in Pharmacy
Practice] or PharmD.)B. Five (5) years or more experience as Director or associate or assistant director of a large hospital pharmacy.C. R.Ph. license in North Carolina (or eligible for). Certificate of completion of an American Society of Hospital Pharmacy Accredited Hospital Pharmacy Residency.D. Self-motivation, strong leadership, team building abilities, and interpersonal communications skills. Experience with various pharmacy automation including pyxis, carousel, and CPOEE. Knowledge, skills and abilities required: Ability to successfully complete generic and department-specific skills validation and competency testing. F. Physical requirements: Repetitive use of hands and fingers (ex. use of a computer keyboard). May require lifting and carrying light loads (up to 40 lbs), including boxes, equipment, unit-dose cassettes and IV solutions and stooping or kneeling. Sitting, walking,
or standing for long periods of times (4-8 hours is often necessary). Must be able to physically operate the equipment used for the job.
